In 2003, an armed conflict in Iraq resulted in artefacts being looted from the country’s archaeological sites and museums. Numerous attempts were made to smuggle stolen artefacts to/through neighbouring Jordan.
Recognizing the significance of Iraq’s cultural heritage, Jordanian customs officials seized thousands of stolen artefacts. Jordan safeguarded these and subsequently returned them to Iraq. Cooperation between the Jordanian authorities, law-enforcement agencies, international and regional cultural organizations, and military educators contributed to these acts of compliance with IHL.
