In 2011, civilians in north-eastern Nigeria began fleeing their homes owing to armed conflict there between governmental forces and the armed group Boko Haram. By 2014, there were 647,000 IDPs across six Nigerian states, living in camps, public buildings or with host families. Since 2015 security has improved in parts of the region, prompting some to return home.
The Federal Government of Nigeria recognized the unfolding humanitarian emergency and requested help from the United Nations (UN) to lead an effective response. Together they helped civilians cope with the multiple challenges caused by displacement. In areas where security has since improved, relevant state and non-state actors have refocused their efforts to facilitate IDPs’ return home.
