Landmine contamination in Thailand is concentrated in regions bordering Cambodia, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia and Myanmar, a legacy of past armed conflicts. Besides causing death and injury, the mines hinder development and economic growth in the affected communities.
Following Thailand’s ratification of the 1997 Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction (Ottawa Convention), the government took significant steps to demine affected land, destroy landmine stockpiles and promote awareness of the dangers of mines. As a result, the number of landmine casualties significantly reduced.
