Between 1980 and 1988 Iran and Iraq were engaged in a protracted armed conflict. Decades after the end of hostilities, many thousands of people remain unaccounted for.
In 2008 the governments of Iran and Iraq signed an agreement with the ICRC to work jointly, for the first time, to investigate and resolve cases of people missing in connection with the conflict and to repatriate recovered human remains. Accordingly, both governments took action to accelerate progress in these areas.
